Having completed Stage 3 you will be able to sail in any direction and rig and launch your boat. Your skills and knowledge mean that you can regard yourself as a sailor, not a beginner. A Stage 4 certificate means that you have the skills to sail a double handed boat as crew or helm, and solve a variety of problems afloat. Passing this course is the natural netry point for the advanced courses. During the course you can expect to be learning skills as listed below.
- Able to rig a boat according to the weather conditions
- Able to Sail upwind, downwind and accross the wind
- Able to use the five essentials while sailing
- Knows the basic Rules of sailing

- Able to do basic sailing manoevres, such as coming alongside and picking up a mooring
- Able to do man over board
- Has knowledge of tides
- Has knowledge of simple coastal navigation, such as buoyage and charts
- Can tie a variety of knots that are used in sailing
- Able to effectly sail a boat as helm and crew
- Has experience of sailing a variety of boats
- Understands how a sail works - basic aerodynamics
- Knows how to recover from a variety of different capsizes including inversion
